Almeria Properties and Villas near Spanish towns
The Almanzora Valley is steeped in history with origins dating back to prehistoric times, through to Romans, Moors and Christians. The village of Arboleas is a municipality of Almeria province. Arboleas is a small town about 65km2 and some 278 meters above sea level on the bank of the Almanzora River, in the spurs of the Sierra de los Filabres in the Almanzora valley, one of many small settlements along the course of the river, which waters the fertile plains. It has a strong agricultural economy, producing citrus fruit, olives, almonds and cereals.
Places of Interest, the Church of Santiago, late 19th century Torre de Arboleas, possibly a 15th century watchtower, now a clock. Festivals Saint James, 25th July San Roque, 15th August Patron Saint festivities, last Sunday in October gastronomy based on local produce.
Huércal-Overa, formally two towns during the Phoenician times of Huércal and Overa and has been inhabited by the Phoenicians, Greeks and Romans also since its inception. These two towns later came together giving rise to its name to day, its origins as a commercial center date back to the Phoenician times and today boasts the best hospital in Spain and the second best in Europe. The town has a variety of shops, hotels, restaurants and bars, sports centre with out door pool and soon to be completed a brand new in door pool. A cinema showing English films on a regular basis, a number of very good schools, pharmacies, doctors as expected by a modern town. Huércal-Overa is the second largest municipality in Almeria and has plenty of historical buildings to see.
One building of which is the Parish Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asuncion, built 1505 and the chapel of Jesus Nazareno built 1749 flaunting an impressive statue of Jesus Nazareno carved by Franscisco Salzillo. Easter is a focal point in their calendar when the passion of Christ is celebrated and a procession takes place. Recently declared a National Tourist attraction commences with statues carried by floats and locals dressed in white. Places of interest around the town are a must see, the Church of Santa María de Nieva, 18th century Parish Church of La Asunción, 18th century Nazari Tower of Huércal, 13th -15th century Town Hall, 19th century Wheat Granary, 18th century Bullring and 1901 Archaeological Remains.
Festivals are the Night of Lights on the 8th February Holy Week, Livestock Fair 25th June and the Virgen de la Asunción 23rd to 30th October. Gastronomy for the town is Rabbit with fried bread, garlic and other ingredients. Wheat stew, Kid in garlic, Partridge, Almond cakes and not forgetting the Local wine.
